John Lewis - Counsellor - Experience

Do you need to deal with difficult emotions behaviours or thoughts which cause problems for you in your life?

My counselling training began with four years of Gestalt Therapy, followed by a Diploma in Counselling at Christchurch Polytechnic. I have been a counsellor since 1992. I am a member of NZAC and have been working both in the public health sector and through my own consultancy. My work includes general counselling for most problems and issues. I work with clients suggesting coping strategies and assisting them with making plans to alleviate troubling symptoms. Other areas include dealing with issues on sexual orientation, self-confidence and drug and alcohol abuse.

My work has also included earthquake counselling through Relationship Services and in addition counselling clients who have access to the Employment Assistance Programme (EAP) through their workplace.
I also supervise for a number of agencies and individuals, regarding counselling.

I work full-time Monday to Friday from 23 Peacock St, in Christchurch Central, (just off either Montreal or Durham one-way streets near Bealey Avenue) including offering services before or after normal working hours. Counselling work is done on a personal basis with an emphasis on confidentiality in a safe environment.

I am a good listener and have a warm sense of humour.

My client base is varied, which equates to dealing with most general counselling issues, including relationships, anxiety, depression, grief, changing circumstances, family conflict, motivation and achieving goals. I come from a business background, working and motivating a large staff base. From this I began exploring how people could get their needs meet and achieve goals. I have also studied mindfulness to help clients understand and change their thought processes.

Psychotherapy and counselling can provide a secure professional relationship to assist working through conflicts to help manage, reflect and understand ourselves. Within the relationship there emerges a process of self-discovery.
Psychotherapy is about you, your past and present, conscious and unconscious behaviours, thoughts and emotions and how they inter-relate.
Most of my clients are referred by general practitioners, or 'word-of-mouth’ by people I've treated and through my work have recommended me.
